l'école des loisirs is an independent family-owned publishing group founded
in 1913. First specialising in school books, l'école des loisirs has
expanded to become one of the two largest publishing houses for children's
books in France. Entirely dedicated to children's books since 1965, our
main ambition is to "make reading a pleasure for children".
With a back-list of over 3.500 titles and 250 new titles per year (80%
original titles), l'école des loisirs enjoys a strong reputation among
librarians, booksellers and other professionals and is often nominated for
the children's litterature prizes. We credit our success to our respect for
children and our close relationship with teachers, particularly through our
school book clubs.
l'école des loisirs began publishing children's books with translations
from all over the world, and has built the back list with great authors
like Maurice Sendak, Tomi Ungerer, Leo Lionni, Judy Blume, Mitsumasa Anno,
Kazuo Iwamura, Robert Cormier... Today, talented French authors and artists
such as Claude Boujon, Agnès Desarthe, Marie Desplechin, Marie-Aude Murail,
Susie Morgenstern, Nadja, Claude Ponti and Grégoire Solotareff have made
l'école des loisirs their home and grow with it.
Always interested in foreign publications, l'école des loisirs has opened
three subsidiaries in Europe: Germany (Moritz Verlag), Spain (Editorial
Corimbo) and Italy (Babalibri), an imprint in Belgium (Pastel). Many of our
books have been translated and published throughout the world.
